Why Can't I Skip My 20 Minutes of Reading Tonight?  |  Math Problems of the Month

Each month the children, with my help and your help from home, will be working with and memorizing several math problems. Our goal is to have the children be able to go through these problems quickly when either writing them or saying them. Most of us had to learn this skill as young students too. Our goal is to build math skills that will continue to help each child as they learn increasing difficult math.

This first month I would make a few recommendations for starting.

  1. Cut the cards apart or make a few copies.
  2. You can use something to count while you set up the math problems at first. Examples: toothpicks, lego blocks, silverware--
  3. Reinforce what + and – mean and change what we are doing.
  4. During the first part of the month do a few cards each night.
  5. Toward the end of the month flash the cards to your students and work toward memorization.

**Kmart, Meijer and Wal-Mart all have inexpensive cardboard sets of math flashcards. If you bought a pack you could just pull out the cards that we are working with each month.
