How You Can Help Your Child Develop as a
Writer | 3rd Grade Math
Vocabulary

The following are some important math vocabulary
words we use in third grade, the meanings of which your child should
know. This is not a conclusive list, but just some of the most common
terms we use.
addends –
the numbers added together in an addition problem
array -
an arrangement of objects in
rows and columns
compatible numbers
-
numbers that are easy to compute mentally
(ex. 50+50 instead of 48+54)
difference
– the answer to a subtraction problem
dividend
- a number that is divided by another number
divisible
- a
number is divisible by another number if the result of the division is a
whole number with a remainder of zero
divisor
- the
number that divides the dividend
estimate –
to make an educated guess about the answer to a problem by either
rounding to the nearest ten or hundred
factors –
the numbers multiplied by one another in a multiplication problem
multiple -
a number that is the product
of a given number and another whole number (ex. multiples of 5 are 10,
15, 20, 25, 30, etc.)
ordinal number
- any number which
tells position or order such as 1st, sixth
product –
the answer to a subtraction problem
quotient
- the
answer in a division problem
remainder
- the
amount left over when you find a quotient
sum – the answer to an addition problem
